To become an EMT in New Mexico, you must be at least 18 years old. However, if you’re 17, don’t worry! You can still begin your training if you’re affiliated with an EMS service and have a letter of support from the service director, along with notarized parental or guardian consent. All candidates must complete a bureau-approved EMT-Basic (EMT-B) course through recognized training programs available at community colleges, universities, or ambulance services. You can find a list of approved programs here.

Upon completing your training, you’ll need to submit a bureau-approved license application, show evidence of current CPR certification, and present a certificate of completion from your EMT-B course. Successfully passing the bureau-approved EMT-B licensing examination is next. You have six attempts to pass this exam, and it must be done within 12 months of finishing your course. Once you pass, you’ll also need to acquire a national registry of EMTs certification card by passing both the cognitive and psychomotor Exams.
