UC Davis Fire Department

Course Description
Designed and taught by the UC Davis Fire Department, the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification Program provides students with an outline of the Emergency Medical System (EMS), teaches assessment skills and treatment techniques, and introduces learners to the pathophysiology of common neurological, respiratory and cardiac emergencies found within the scope of practice of an EMT.
Upon completion of this program, you will possess the knowledge and skills expected of an entry-level EMT professional, including:
Fundamentals of emergency medicine (patient assessment, bleeding control, airway management, triage and other skills necessary for the proper care and transport of patients.)
Administrative aspects of emergency medical care (the Emergency Medical System (EMS), workforce safety, communication and medical, legal and ethical issues.) These lessons will then be applied outside of the classroom, as students receive hands-on clinical experience in a hospital emergency room setting and on ambulance ride along.
Course Structure
The EMT Program consists of online lectures, in-person content review and activities, skills practice and simulation-based lab sessions, taking place over 11 weeks, including 24 hours of clinical experience performed outside of the classroom.
The clinical experience component of this program will provide direct patient observation and occurs in a hospital emergency room and an ambulance or fire engine. Must be completed within three weeks of the end date of the course.
California State EMS regulations and college credit standards require a minimum number of hours for EMT education. Therefore, attendance is mandatory and is tracked hour by hour. Students who fail to meet the hourly obligation MUST make up missed hours on an hour for hour basis.
A course completion certificate is awarded to students who pass the course with a score of 80% or better and fulfill all clinical requirements.
Tuition, Fees and Other Costs
In addition to the cost of tuition ($2,195), students should expect to pay $485+ for additional costs and fees.
