District 7 EMT Initial Education

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Course prepares the student to provide emergency
prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and
traumatic injuries. Topics of study include introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles,
and responsibilities of EMT’s, anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma, and special
considerations for working in the prehospital setting.
This EMT course uses a competency-based approach as outlined in the Vermont Emergency Medical
Servicers (VTEMS) EMT Student Minimum Competency Program. Each student must demonstrate
competency in the necessary skills as an entry level EMS provider to qualify for successful course
completion. Competency completion will be documented in a portfolio maintained by the course
Instructor Coordinator that will be maintained as a part of the student’s permanent education file.
Students will also be expected to complete assessments on real patients, either by working with
their sponsoring agency or through coordination with the Instructor Coordinator to identify a potential
field site.
This course is for independently motivated students to complete coursework and able to adapt to
an immersive learning environment. This course utilizes asynchronous learning techniques, and most of
the work will be completed on your own schedule. Please be aware that this class is equivalent to a 6-
credit college level course. Students should expect to spend 6 hours per week in class, and another 10
hours per week doing homework and studying.
