Emergency Medical Technician – EMT

This 200 hour course is designed to train individuals to provide basic emergency medical care in the prehospital setting. Coursework provides students with basic essential knowledge and skills required to work as an EMT Basic.

This basic level course is required to become an Emergency Medical Technician – EMT and prepares students to take the NCOEMS or National Registry examination. Topics covered are: basic pre-hospital emergency care such as treatment for shock, bleeding, burns, poisonings, childbirth, pediatric emergencies, CPR, use of ambulance equipment and communications to the emergency department.

Admission Requirements

17 years of age on or before the official end date of the course.
Possession of a high school diploma, high school equivalency or successful completion of an exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum at the eleventh-grade level.

Learning Outcomes
Apply scientific knowledge in providing prehospital and emergency medical care.
Prepare graduates who are eligible to seek licensure as EMTs and that meet the expectations of the EMS Community.
Provide competent and safe care in a variety of settings to a group of patients with diverse needs across the life span by demonstrating knowledgable decision making and judgement, based on critical thinking, clinical competence, accountability and collaboration with the patient and health care team.
Use effective communication and interpersonal skills with patients and other health care workers.
Demonstrate and foster high standards of Prehospital and Emergency Medical practice in skill performance and patient advocacy.
Operate within the roles of an entry level provider of care and contributor to the EMT profession.
Promote the personal and professional growth, health and success of each student.
