Everett Community College

Everett Community College’s EMT course, EMS 151 (13 credits), is a 1-quarter (12-week) course that will give you:

a college academic certificate that can be stacked toward a 2-year degree (e.g. the Fire Science AAS-T or Associate of Arts & Sciences DTA degrees)
prepare you for the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) exam, a professional certification to work as an EMT across the United States. Please note, additional skills or training may be required in states other than Washington. Students who obtain an NREMT training certificate must find employment within 12 months in order to re-certify with a Washington State EMT-Basic professional certificate, or their training certification will lapse and they will need to re-take the full EMT course to obtain NREMT certification again; only some experienced EMTs are eligible for refresher courses.

The EMS 151 EMT course is offered 3 times each year (currently, no summer course or refresher is available):
Pre-course online assignments begin no later than 1 week prior to course start date.

Take the EMT course while working: This course is designed to be compatible for students who are working regular full-time job hours. However, it is an intensive course and students are discouraged from taking additional credits while they’re completing this course.

Class hours begin the Saturday prior to the regular academic quarter and conclude the Saturday following finals week. This course both has face-to-face and online components.

Saturdays 8:00 or 8:30 am–5:00 pm Drill/Lab Hours, in person
Mondays 6:30 pm–10:00 pm Lectures, in-person
Wednesdays 6:30 pm–10:00 pm Lectures, in person
You will also need to schedule 5 hours of ridealong hours on an emergency transport and 5 hours of clinical hours in an ER that fit with your personal schedule and coordinated with the course instructor after the course begins (may be waived during COVID-19 outbreaks).

Study, Homework, and Preparation: In addition to class and clinical hours, the time commitment is considerable; you should expect an additional 30 hours each week, including:

15 hours of online pre-course training and assignments prior to the first day of class
Self-directed study group review hours outside of class time
Reading approximately 8 textbook chapters per week
Completing 3 online quizzes or tests per week, including pre-and post-quizzes online homework
Attendance Requirements: EMT coursework cannot be made up and certain days are mandatory. Due to the volume of course material and certification requirements, you can only miss 2 days of class, or a maximum of 11.5 hours, regardless of the reason, before receiving an instructor withdrawal (fail), since at that point you would be ineligible to test for NREMT certification.

The final exam for a course grade and college certificate takes place just prior to the end of the course.
The practical half of the NREMT exam takes place on the final day of this course.
Students who are successful will then schedule the written half of the NREMT exam on their own at a nearby exam provider (usually within 3 weeks of completing the course).
