Blackhawk Technical College

Your best day on the job is often the worst day for someone else. That’s the role of an emergency medical technician (EMT).

Throughout Rock and Green counties, Blackhawk is well-known for training EMTs to respond quickly to emergency situations regarding medical issues, traumatic injuries, accident scenes, or whenever disaster strikes.

Blackhawk’s EMT-Basic or EMT-Advanced programs provide the necessary education and training to work on a private ambulance, as a firefighter, a police officer, or a number of other careers in the medical field.

Using advanced technology, such as a digital anatomy table or human simulators, combined with instruction from top-flight professionals and opportunities to do scenario-based training with students from other medical programs, a graduate from this program will gain the skills they need to become a successful emergency medical technician.

The EMT-Basic program is a 5-credit, 180-hour course, plus 10+ hours in a hospital emergency room setting and ambulance ride-along training.
The EMT-Advanced program is a 4 credit, 180-hour course with approximately 65 hours of clinical time
For both the Basic or Advanced programs, students should expect to have caregiver background checks for the clinical portion of the course. Students must also meet the immunization requirements set by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and proof of health insurance.
For both the Basic or Advanced programs, a minimum of 75% is required on all exams to be eligible to attend the National Registry of EMT (NREMT) or EMT Intermediate practical and written exams needed for Wisconsin EMT licensing.

Upon successful completion of this technical diploma, students will be able to:

Prepare for incident response and EMS operations
Integrate pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to provide appropriate patient care
Demonstrate EMT skills associated with established standards and procedures for a variety of patient encounters
Communicate effectively with others
Meet state competencies for EMT certification
