EMT Basic Initial Traditional
Description
The EMT training program is a vigorous program consisting of classroom instruction, laboratory skill practice, and supervised clinical experience. The course of instruction prepares the student to deliver prompt, effective, and efficient emergency care to victims of sudden injury or illness as well as routine and emergent inter-facility transfers. The curriculum emphasizes accurate patient assessment and the development of essential patient care skills, while applying the knowledge of physiology, pathophysiology, and problem-solving techniques. Graduates will be prepared to make well informed decisions regarding prehospital care and will have the background necessary to develop additional skills as changes and innovations occur within the profession. Students are required to successfully demonstrate competence in all skills contained in the EMT skills list. South Carolina State certification will be awarded, by the Department of Health and Environmental Control, to those graduates who successfully complete the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians computer-based written and practical examination, which is the exit/certification examination for all South Carolina initial EMT courses.
Policies
Students participating in the EMT program must have:
a high school diploma or a GED
must be eighteen (18) years of age prior to the last scheduled day of class
achieve the minimum required score on the Wonderlic Exam SLE-Q (15) or earned twelve (12) college credits or more. Students that have State EMS credentials, choosing to re-obtain NREMT by taking the initial EMT Course are exempt from the entrance exam.
High Speed Internet Access must be physically fit and able to perform all the tasks required of an EMT (Appendix B: Essential Functions)
Each student must be covered by employer’s Worker’s Compensation or have major medical health insurance that remains in effect throughout intermediate training.
The clinical contracts require that our office have on file for each student participating in the clinical process a current health statement verifying that the student has tested negative for tuberculosis within twelve (12) months of the beginning of the class and verifying immunization against M.M.R, Varicella, Seasonal Influenza, TDaP and Hepatitis B.
EMT Basic Hybrid Initial
This is a hybrid course that lasts approximately 16 weeks. You will be required to complete class via an interactive classroom and there will be online activities. There will be an online lecture (weekly after the first start date, which is IN class), which will be recorded and will allow you to review. There will be weekly skill sessions (weekly after the first week noted on the schedule, up to course completion).

Course Description
Our 240 hour Hybrid EMT-Basic program exceeds the minimum hours as required for certification as a Basic EMT in South Carolina (200 hours minimum required by DHEC). This is the initial pre-hospital emergency medical technician certification in South Carolina and there are no pre-requisites. This program prepares the candidate to provide basic emergency medical care to victims of trauma and illness. This course follows and exceeds the 2009 US Department of Transportation (DOT) / National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum.
Entrance Requirements
High School Diploma or GED (copy must be provided).
