After successful completion of the course, the student should be able to complete the following:

Pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Examination and obtain valid EMT licensure to practice as an EMT in the State of Iowa.
Discuss the nature and seriousness of a patient’s condition, or the extent of injuries, and assess the necessities and requirements for providing emergency medical care.
Lift, move, position, and handle the patient in a manner that minimizes discomfort to the patient and provides safe body function and mechanics to prevent injury to the prehospital provider.
Perform the expected job duties and requirements of an EMT safely and effectively.
Operate an ambulance or another emergency vehicle in a manner that is safe for the crew, the patient, and the general public.
Perform a patient transfer to an equal or higher medical provider appropriately to provide a continuation of care to greater provide positive outcomes.
Understanding of the requirements for certification as an EMT in the State of Iowa and recertification.
Demonstrate how to handle cases of suspected child or dependent adult abuse and know the reporting requirements.
Accurately identify the need for rapid transport in patients determined to have life-threatening injuries/illnesses.

This course will be organized to provide the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) student with the knowledge of the acute and critical changes in physiology, psychological, and clinical symptoms as they pertain to the prehospital emergency care of the infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient. Students shall have an opportunity to acquire clinical and field experience and practice skills related to the emergency medical care of these patients. In addition, students will understand the ethical and legal responsibilities that they assume as students and eventual providers. This program will prepare the student to be a competent entry-level EMT. Students will be required to complete 36 field internship hours and 24 clinical internship hours. Internship time will be spent with various departments and hospitals. Students are responsible for providing their own meals and transportation to and from classroom and clinical/field internship times.
